▶ Climate Jobs Corps – Induction Cooktop Demonstration Coordinator
$18.00 – $20.00 per hour | ~20 hours per week
Climate Action Santa Monica (CASM) is a nonprofit focused on climate mitigation and adaptation amidst the climate emergency. We are a collaborative group working to help transform complex systems at the local level in collaboration with partners and the City of Santa Monica. We run a number of programs that organize and engage our community in climate issues, including a youth summer program, CASM Climate Corps, and the Climate Job Corps, a workforce development program run by CASM and the City of Santa Monica that is part of CaliforniansForAll Youth Job Corps.
One of our areas of focus is decarbonization of buildings. Methane gas stoves are a widespread and potentially hazardous use of fossil fuels inside buildings. Induction electric cooking is a clean and advanced technology that has many superior features over gas stoves. Sharing these benefits with the public is important to local, state, and global goals to eliminate use of fossil fuels that causes climate change and air pollution.
Description
The Induction Cooking Demonstration Coordinators (2) will work with the Climate Job Corps Manager to support CASM’s goal of educating the public on sustainable energy systems. The location of the role is in Santa Monica, CA. Candidates must be able to be present for team meetings and educational trainings in Santa Monica as well as work independently offsite. This position is funded through the Californians for All Youth Workforce Development program, which is intended to provide purposeful job opportunities for underserved youth. The position will last 6 months. It is a half-time (20 hours per week) role.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The team of two Induction Cooking Demonstration Coordinators will be responsible for the following:
- Help develop recipes to showcase induction cooking and seasonal vegetables from Santa Monica’s four weekly farmers markets
- Perform induction cooktop demonstrations at farmers markets and other events to highlight our need to transition away from fossil fuels in our everyday lives.
- Become familiar with and be able to explain the benefits and techniques of induction cooking
- Organize procurement of vegetables and food from farmers’ markets and other supplies for use in cooking demos at events
- Prep food for cooking, transport light cargo of supplies to events
- Hand out cooked food samples
- Bring awareness and encourage support to the City of Santa Monica’s efforts toward electrification in our buildings
- Share information about Santa Monica’s policies and incentives for building electrification
- Comply with applicable regulations for food safety per event permit requirements
- Network and cultivate relationships with current and new community stakeholders
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Food industry experience and/or experience performing food demonstrations highly desired
- Organized, detail oriented, strong work ethic, friendly, smart, proactive and a quick learner
- Environmental consciousness and some understanding of human-caused climate change is preferred
- Ability to travel to sites in Santa Monica and surrounding area as needed, sometimes with light cargo
- Enthusiasm for learning and educating others
- Ability to have fun interacting with the public at events!
- Experience working with youth, communications, non-profits, or community organizing are a plus
- High school or equivalent education
- Interest in Santa Monica and its sustainability policies is preferred
- Ability to work during the week and/or weekend days including starting early
- Ability to attend team meetings and educational events in Santa Monica and the area, in person and via zoom. Technology assistance can be provided.
- Bilingual (Spanish) verbal is a plus
- Food service sanitation certifications may be required to obtain as required by event permits

Description
The Program Assistant works closely with the Executive Director to carry out programs and administrative functions of Climate Action Santa Monica, a nonprofit focused on local actions and advocacy. CASM works on policy, public education and engagement, and runs a youth program, CASM Climate Corps. The Program Assistant will support CASM as needed with administrative tasks and outreach to participants. This position is grant funded through the Californians for All Youth Workforce Development program, dedicated to supporting underserved youth. This is a part-time role, for six months, with possibility of continuation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Help organize online events including bi-monthly member meetings, and bi-monthly SAMOCAN (Santa Monica Climate Action Network) meetings. This includes coordination with speakers, helping to facilitate meetings, distributing invitations, tracking registration, promoting SAMOCAN events, collecting feedback and coordinating with event partners.
- Help create and execute a plan for reaching out to building owners as part of a campaign to promote clean renewable energy.
- Organize outreach to students and other leaders at Santa Monica College, SAMOHI, and important energy users to increase engagement with climate issues.
- Post regularly on instagram and Facebook and other CASM accounts following guidelines and communications plan.
- Schedule working meetings and reach out to participants regarding attendance.
- Assist with other in-person and online community engagement and fundraising activities as needed.
- Assist with updates to CASM’s website.
- Use and maintain the CASM database using Aplos and google drive
- Assist with creation of invoices and financial accounting reports.
- Organize and maintain communication with volunteers and CASM team to support projects, advocacy and teamwork.
- Participate in team meetings online and in person in Santa Monica to collaborate and share work.
- Other tasks as necessary.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Interest and enthusiasm for connecting with and organizing people including outreach via phone, text and email.
- Interest in learning about and using spreadsheets and word processing, and people and project management software.
- Interest in and ability to use Facebook, Instagram, and other social media.
- Very good writing skills, and an interest in creating written and visual content for public communications and advocacy.
- Ability to communicate with volunteers and community members in an encouraging supportive manner.
- Interest in work aimed at creating community and social change, particularly related to environment and climate.
- Presence at events sometimes requested in the evening and on weekends.
Education and Experience
- High school or equivalent education
- Knowledge of Spanish a plus
- Some knowledge of climate and environmental or urban planning.
