CASM IN THE COMMUNITY | |
What’s CASM been up to this month?
Meanwhile, in the community…
On October 3rd, 14 students, including five new to the club, met at Urth Caffe in Santa Monica. Students chatted, new folks were introduced, and everyone placed their orders. Club leaders Sarrie and Kamila took the lead, sharing announcements and updates as students enjoyed their drinks and pastries. After a pause, Sarrie looked over and asked, “is it time to get crafty?” It was. The group proceeded to turn the three cafe tables into a climate art station, painting cardboard slices for CASM’s “ wheel of knowledge,” and setting up their “ what makes you want to walk” poster to use for farmers market tabling on Sunday, along with other flyers and resources to encourage sustainable commutes. Even while painting signs like “air pollution” and “waste,” there was a jovial feel to the meeting. Students laughed, chatted, supported each other, and seemed proud of their work. At the end of the meeting, several of the new students (who initially came for the extra credit their teacher offered) asked to be added to the group chat to continue with the club.
On Sunday October 6th, six students from the Climate Corps Club met at the Main Street Farmers Market to share information about sustainable commutes. After setting the booth, they hyped each other up to speak to passers by, inviting them to sign their “what makes you want to walk” poster board. The market traffic was slower that day, but club members stayed enthusiastic to share with all who stopped by. Several people shared that safe, clean streets, and access to elements of nature make them want to walk, while other responses were more surprising, like “seeing neighborhood cats.” What makes YOU want to walk? Following the market tabling, CASM hosted its Picnic on Planet, the 4th of our new (ish) monthly picnics, which are open to all and meant to build community and collaboration. Three students from the club stayed to join. Once others arrived, the group played a brand new game, created by CASM Program Lead Makeda Bullock Floyd. It’s a conversation game meant to inspire meaningful discussion, awareness, and thinking “outside the box,” when it comes to the environment and how we relate to it and each other. The group selected one card from each of three stacks (topics, questions, and quality cards), and then discussed. This was the first group to play the game, and they were surprised and delighted by the powerful and challenging combinations that came up from the cards. “Compassion in a disrupted world, what is Santa Monica’s contribution, and inspiration,” “choosing the difficult, what are we fighting for, and flexibility,” and “walking, who is someone in your group who demonstrates this quality, and attention to detail” all came up. The game was well received and got the whole group engaged together. Makeda plans to keep adding cards to the game and playing it at picnics, and she’d love to try it out with other events and groups! | |
